By:Maral Mammadzada July 15, 2013 Azerbaijan, located in Western Asia, is one of the historical Turkic states. For many years it was absorbed into the Russian Empire. However, in 1918 Azerbaijan gained independence and joined the USSR along with Armenia and Georgia. The country has an area of 87,600 square kilometers. Its population consists mainly of Azerbaijanis holding Islam as their religion, but there are also other ethnic groups that live in Azerbaijan (Armenians, Greeks, Russians). The capital city of Azerbaijan is Baku (historically known as "Baki"), but the largest city is actually Sumgait (sometimes called "Sumqayit"). Baku and Sumgait are the only big cities in the Caucasus. Azerbaijan is located between the Caspian Sea and the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range. Its border with Iran is one of its major ethnographical characteristics as it extends more than 1,700 kilometers. The Caspian Sea serves as a border to Azerbaijan as well as to Iran and Armenia. The word "Azerbaijan" comes from "azat-bayraysh" meaning "the land of ature". According to some sources, its meaning is more like "the state of truth" or more likely, "land of fire". The word was originally just a reference to Azerbaijan's central mountain range. The name is also used as a metonym for the country of Azerbaijan. In some other languages, such as Turkish it means "again". In English, Azerbaijan is called Azerbaijan. Armenia It's been said that the name "Armenia" comes from two Armenian words: armu meaning mountain and eyan meaning sunrise. Another source says that Armenia was named after Armenia, a grandson of Noah. Armenians call this country arovinyants or aroviants or aroveniants depending on which dialect you go by. Armenians are the largest ethnic group in Armenia and make up about two-thirds of its population with minorities representing almost all other ethnic groups in the country. There is a small population of Turks and Azerbaijanis with some small minorities of Circassians. Armenia is located in the southwestern part of Eastern Europe and shares borders with Turkey to the north, with Iran to the south and west, with the de facto independent Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) also to the south-west, with Georgia to the east, and with Azerbaijan's exclave of Nakhichevan. To its west are Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The country has an area of 93 thousand sq kms. The climate is moderate. It has hot summers while winters are rather cold. cfa1e77820
