The Aalavandhan is a 1985 Indian film, directed by Mani Ratnam. It was produced by Ratnam's production company, AGS Entertainment and was released on 2 December 1985. The film tells the story of three childhood friends in Chennai, India - Rajesh (Mukesh), Nizam (Vijayakumar), and Shankar (Gowtham) - who experience personal betrayals in adulthood in different ways. The Indian film industry was in its nascent stage in the 1970s when the death of Sivaji Ganesan affected it tremendously. The late actor was one of the biggest stars at the time, making the industry suffer a major setback. The void in Tamil cinema was filled by actors like M. G. Ramachandran and Sivakumar, who gave it back its lustre. The early 1980s saw actor Kamal Haasan reinventing himself with his blockbuster Apoorva Raagangal (1975), which helped him carve out a unique identity in Tamil cinema - an actor who dared to experiment with his roles without compromising on commercial aspects of filmmaking. His success catapulted him into becoming one of Tamil cinema's most versatile screen personalities. In an interview, Mani Ratnam had referred to Kamal as 'the Marlon Brando of Indian cinema'. Ratnam was an established celebrity of the Tamil film industry himself by then. He began his directorial debut with Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983), a movie which brought him critical acclaim, but was a box-office failure. A year later, he changed his pace and made a romantic drama called Nayakan starring superstar Rajinikanth. The film was a box office blockbuster and earned him several awards for best director. After this hit, he made Mouna Ragam with veteran actress Revathi as his heroine. This film also gave Ratnam huge commercial success as well as critical applause worldwide. By the mid-1980s, Ratnam's career was at its peak and he had established himself as a major force to reckon with in South Indian cinema. Then in 1985, with Mani Ratnam's "Aalavandhan", his popularity at its apex and his status further enhanced. "Aalavandhan" was the first Tamil film to be shot in east London; it also marked Indian cinema’s foray into Hollywood with an Oscar nomination for original score (incidentally, the earliest such nomination for India). The film dealt with sensitive issues like marital discord and infidelity. It was also critically and commercially successful and one of its biggest hits ever. Ratnam has cited "Aalavandhan" as the film that drove him into directing Hindi movies, and it is considered a major milestone in his career. The film met with universal critical acclaim and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for best direction, Best Male Playback Singer (Jeeva) and Special Jury Award for Music Direction.
