Aadukalam is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language sports drama film written and directed by Vetrimaaran. The film stars Dhanush, Pasupathy, Premgi Amaren and Poonam Bajwa in the lead roles. In the movie, Theseeran (Dhanush) is a boxing champion from a small village in southern Tamil Nadu who falls in love with Kalaiyarasi(Poonam Bajwa) from Jaffna in Sri Lanka during an international competition. The film narrates how they faced social problems after immigrating to India for marriage only to find themselves at the centre of a conflict between two communities owing to their caste difference. The film opened to positive reviews from the critics, with a critic from The Hindu calling it a "stunning debut" that was "without a flaw". The soundtrack and background score were also well received, while Sify called it a "thrilling escape thriller". It emerged as one of the highest grossing Tamil films in 2011. In an interview to Indiaglitz.com, Dhanush said that he had to put on weight for the role of Theseeran and waited for three months to get the ideal body shape. The film follows a group of Tamil male boxers, who travel from a small village in southern Tamil Nadu to participate in the international boxing championship. They travel to Chennai, where they stay with a friend of their coach. After a day's training, they leave for Manali. The makers reportedly kept the film's script confidential for six months before it was released to avoid any rumours surrounding the film's plot, leading to much speculation amongst the media and fans before the release. The director himself refused to reveal any details in an interview given in 2011. Soon after, reports started emerging that Dhanush was playing the role of Theseeran(Thyseeeran) in this movie. The shooting of the movie started on a grand note with a pooja in the Tamil month of Avani, that is, August 2011. However, backstage issues emerged when Premgi Amaren skipped the shooting for a couple of days. Though Premgi then tried to patch up with Vetrimaaran and even persuaded him to continue the shoot, both remained firm on their decision and Premgi's role was later handed over to Pasupathy. During the making of the film, Dhanush had put on 15 kg of weight and underwent rigorous training at Chennai’s Nungambakkam Stadium under coach Michael Fernandes for six months to get into shape for his role. The film is loosely based on the life story of a middle class Tamilian boxer from a village in Southern India called Karungulam, played by Dhanush in the movie. The story was written in 2000 by Vetrimaaran when he was pursuing his post-graduate degree in management studies from Naduvile College, Tiruchirappalli. He wanted to produce a low budget sports movie along with an actor he had been watching on TV who eventually became Dhanush. In 2010 when Dhanush was out of town shooting Krishna and he happened to be visiting an event at his school where they were showcasing the movie's crew and Vetrimaaran met him and got convinced with his looks. cfa1e77820
